How to check a heating design before buying equipment
Review a design before ordering equipment or starting installation. At this stage, missing information and inconsistencies can still be resolved before they become purchases and completed works.
Start with the initial information
Collect the design brief, building layouts, intended use and connection specifications. Compare document revisions: changes to layouts, loads or use must be reflected in the design. Record missing information as a question rather than replacing it with assumptions during procurement.
Compare calculations and drawings
Check that the calculations refer to the same building and design revision as the drawings. Ask the designer to explain how loads and operating conditions relate to the selected pipes, devices and equipment. An equipment schedule does not replace justification of its parameters.
Review the specification
Compare items and quantities with diagrams, references and layouts. Clarify substitution criteria, equipment completeness and supply boundaries. A substitute must meet compatibility and design requirements, rather than simply matching the name or rated capacity.
Consider installation and maintenance
Check equipment access, valve and instrument locations and interfaces with other systems. Hydraulic balancing should form part of the design. Settings are specific to the system’s calculations and conditions; one universal setting does not suit every building.
Record the outcome
List questions against the relevant drawing, item or source document. Agree who will resolve each observation and which revision is current. A useful review produces a written report that allows corrections to be checked. Send the documentation and project stage to discuss an independent engineering review.
